Plantar Plate Injury

What is a Plantar Plate Injury?

The plantar plate is a strong ligament beneath the ball of the foot that supports the base of the toe at the metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ). Injury typically affects the 2nd toe and can cause:

Pain or swelling under the ball of the foot

A feeling of instability

The toe drifting or lifting upward

Why Use Taping?

Taping helps to:

Reduce strain on the plantar plate

Limit upward bending (dorsiflexion) of the toe

Relieve pain when walking or standing

Support healing alongside other treatments like footwear changes or orthotics

Taping Technique: Step-by-Step

You will need:

Rigid zinc oxide tape (about 1.25cm width)

Scissors

Clean, dry skin

Step 1: Anchor Around the Toe

Wrap a small piece of tape around the base of the affected toe, just snug enough to stay in place — not too tight to cut off circulation.

Step 2: Plantar Pull

With the toe gently flexed downwards (plantarflexed), pull a strip of tape from the toe anchor down and back toward the sole, anchoring it around the midfoot or base of the foot. This creates a "buddy strap" effect to hold the toe downward.

Step 3: Secure the Tape

Smooth down all tape edges. The final taping should hold the toe slightly downward and limit upward motion during walking.

How Often Should I Tape?

Tape daily, especially during weight-bearing activities.

Remove at night to allow skin to breathe.

Replace the tape if it loosens or becomes uncomfortable.

Tips for Best Results

Combine taping with appropriate footwear (low heels, stiff-soled shoes).

Avoid barefoot walking where possible.

Monitor for signs of skin irritation or loss of circulation (cold, pale, or blue toe).

When to Seek Further Advice

If pain persists, worsens, or the toe becomes more deformed, consult your podiatrist. Taping is usually part of a broader treatment plan, which may include orthotics, footwear advice, or in some cases, surgery.
